Crude Soybean Oil

Crude soybean oil is solvent-extracted from the seed of Glycine max and supplied unrefined or degummed, carrying CAS number 8001-22-7. It is the feedstock behind most North and South American biodiesel, largely because soybean is grown primarily for protein meal and the oil is effectively a co-product of that crush. Its fatty acid profile is dominated by linoleic acid at roughly 51 percent, with oleic at 23 and saturated chains at about 15. The high polyunsaturate content works in two directions. It keeps saturated content low, so soybean methyl ester has a cloud point around 0 to 2 degrees Celsius, far better than palm FAME. But each of those linoleic chains carries two double bonds and the alpha-linolenic fraction carries three, and every double bond is a site for oxidative attack, so soybean FAME has the poorest oxidation stability of the major feedstocks and will not meet the EN 14214 induction period without antioxidant. Phosphorus from residual phospholipids is the other specification point, since it poisons hydrotreating catalysts and carries into the finished ester, so degumming is normally required. It is used for FAME biodiesel, hydrotreated renewable diesel, HEFA aviation pathways and oleochemical conversion.
