Why is rapeseed oil a preferred feedstock for European biodiesel?

Its low saturated fat content gives rapeseed methyl ester a favourable cold filter plugging point, and its iodine value usually falls within the EN 14214 limit without blending. That combination suits winter diesel in northern and central Europe, which is why RME became the reference biodiesel in many European markets.
    2

Why does crude rapeseed oil contain more sulphur than other vegetable oils?

Rapeseed contains glucosinolates, sulphur compounds that partly break down during pressing and extraction, and some of the sulphur-bearing products dissolve in the oil. Refining reduces them, but buyers producing biodiesel, which is limited to 10 mg/kg sulphur, should measure sulphur on every lot with a suitable low-level method.
    3

What is the difference between pressed and extracted rapeseed oil?

Expeller pressing removes most of the oil mechanically; solvent extraction of the press cake recovers the rest. Pressed oil tends to contain fewer phospholipids, while extracted oil carries more phosphorus and needs a residual-solvent check. Large crushers usually combine both, and the resulting crude oil is a blend of the two streams.
    4

Does rapeseed oil count towards SAF obligations?

ReFuelEU Aviation excludes biofuels made from food and feed crops, so rapeseed oil does not count towards the EU SAF obligation, and the UK SAF Mandate takes a similar approach. It can still count towards road transport targets within national crop caps. Confirm the treatment for your market with your certification body.
    5

What should crude rapeseed oil be tested for before HVO processing?

Phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium and potassium, which poison or foul hydrotreating catalysts, plus chlorophyll-related compounds and sulphur. Degumming and bleaching typically bring these down to low mg/kg levels, and measuring the incoming range lets you size bleaching-earth consumption realistically.
    6

What should I specify in a crude rapeseed oil enquiry?

Your FFA, moisture and impurities, phosphorus, sulphur and iodine value limits, erucic acid content if relevant, whether pressed, extracted or degummed oil is acceptable, the conversion route, volume, packaging, delivery point and Incoterm, and the sustainability documents required. If the oil is for winter-grade ester, say so, as it helps match suitable lots.
